Sealcoating Material Calculator: How Much Sealer and Crack Fill Do You Need?
Sealcoating Material Calculator: How Much Sealer and Crack Fill Do You Need?
Underestimate materials → delay the job. Overestimate materials → waste money.
Use a material calculator to get it right the first time.
Sealer calculation (coverage rate)
Standard coverage rate: 80 sq ft per gallon (mixed sealer, 2 coats)
Formula:
- Total sq ft ÷ 80 = gallons of sealer (for 2 coats)
Example:
- 3,000 sq ft driveway
- 3,000 ÷ 80 = 37.5 gallons
Adjustments:
- Rough/porous surface → lower coverage (70 sq ft/gallon)
- Smooth surface → higher coverage (90 sq ft/gallon)
- 1 coat vs. 2 coats → cut in half or double
Crack fill calculation
Standard coverage rate: 150 linear feet per gallon
Formula:
- Total linear ft ÷ 150 = gallons of crack fill
Example:
- 200 linear ft of cracks
- 200 ÷ 150 = 1.3 gallons
Adjustments:
- Wide cracks (>1/2 inch) → lower coverage (100 linear ft/gallon)
- Narrow cracks → higher coverage (200 linear ft/gallon)
Sand calculation (for traction)
Standard rate: 2–4 lbs per gallon of sealer
Formula:
- Gallons of sealer × 3 lbs = lbs of sand
Example:
- 37.5 gallons of sealer
- 37.5 × 3 = 112.5 lbs of sand

FAQ
What if I'm using coal tar vs. asphalt emulsion?
Coverage rates are similar, but check your manufacturer's specs. BidBlitz lets you customize coverage rates per product.
Should I round up or down?
Always round up. It's better to have leftover material than to run short and delay the job.
Can I save my material calculations?
Yes — BidBlitz saves material estimates per bid so you can reference them later.
